Shoes leave footprints. Ours just happen to be a lot smaller—65% less CO₂ than the average sneaker, to be exact. Just 4.75 kg instead of 13.6 kg. Better, but not enough. We take full responsibility.
FINDING OUR PATH
At first, we thought our solution was simple: plant trees. Trees are amazing—they absorb CO₂, support wildlife, and even help stop soil erosion. Plus, who wouldn't love the idea of a "Footwear Forest"?
But then we discovered Carbonkiller, a project by WISE (World Information Service on Energy), and we were instantly drawn to their approach. It turns out, there's more to carbon offsets than just planting trees. Carbonkiller was a perfect match for Nooch at this stage, and while our dream of a Footwear Forest remains, we've chosen to take this approach first.
WHAT IS CARBONKILLER
Carbonkiller works to stop CO₂ emissions before they even happen. They do this by working within the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which limits the total amount of CO₂ certain industries can produce. Here's how it works:
- Industries receive a set number of "carbon allowances," each allowing them to emit one tonne of CO₂.
- Companies that emit less than their limit can sell their unused allowances.
- However, the EU ETS is flawed—Shell, for example, exploits loopholes by relying on cheap carbon credits instead of reducing emissions.
- Carbonkiller tackles this by buying and permanently destroying these allowances.
- By doing this, Carbonkiller reduces the overall number of allowances, forcing the polluters to pay
- This ultimately encourages companies to adopt greener practices.
